The Positive Outcome of Becoming Vegan and Preventing Hair Loss
May 18, 2018

You have decided to go vegan. There may be some health concerns that you need to be aware of. Please do your research, hair loss is a very common issue that is associated with going vegan. During that transition period, hair loss is something that is often experienced. But wait! Not everything is bad news, don’t feel discouraged, it is preventable! Here are some reasons vegans lose their hair, and how you can avoid it.
Low Protein
Going vegan means your cutting all meat out of your diet as well as any animal byproduct. It’s a change that sometimes leads to sudden drops of protein intake. When your body has low protein levels, one of the reactions your body takes is to stop hair growth to conserve energy for more essential body functions. If you have a severe loss of protein from your system that can cause you to lose the hair you will notice a lot of thinning.
Nutrient Deficiency
We can agree that your diet has taken a drastic change, and as a result of that, you’re going to experience nutrient deficiency. Iron which is usually found in whole grains and red meat is often the issue for those who decide to go vegan. Having an iron as well a vitamin deficiency can lead to hair loss. Your body cuts hair growth so it is very important to watch your diet closely to avoid that dilemma.
Rapid Weight Loss
It is common for new vegans to lose a lot of weight. This happens because you’re cutting off the most fattening aspects. The result of rapid weight loss can put your body under a tremendous amount of stress. Having so much stress may confuse your body’s natural processes, again this disruption can lead to hair loss.
Thyroid Problems
Anyone who goes vegan can often have an increase in their soy intake. If you suffer a thyroid problem soy can worsen the issue. This issue is made worse when your body lacks iodine. It is important that you monitor your soy intake and iodine levels if you suffer from thyroid problems.
Eat Nutrient-Rich Foods
You can lose vital nutrients when you go vegan so you need to be careful, and eat foods that are high in nutrients that you are lacking. Carrots are a great source of vitamins c, and walnuts are a good source of vitamin E. Foods like bok choy, spinach, and other leafy greens provide you with iron your body needs. By eating nutritious foods your rewarding your body with vital and essentials it needs and it will avoid your body from stopping hair growth.
Watch Your Protein Intake
Like I mentioned before elimination meat and animal byproducts from your diet, the result can be a lack of protein. There are a number of foods you can eat to substitute the lack of protein your body is having. You can substitute meat for foods like quinoa, lentils, black beans, chia and sunflower seeds, green peas, and tofu.
