How to Restore a Human Hair Wig
October 01, 2024
There are lots of benefits that go with wearing a human hair wig. However, you will have to take good care of the wig to take advantage of all of them. Over time, the strands of your wig may become dirty and stiff. This is normal, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Bringing softness back to your human hair wig is possible, with these steps.
Revitalizing Your Human Hair Wig: Steps to Restore Softness and Shine
Understanding what causes your human hair wig to become dry and brittle can give you clues to how to take care of it and restore its softness in the future. Because your wig lacks the scalp oils that your natural hair has, they get dry as time goes by. Other factors that may contribute to the issue include exposure to sunlight, chlorine, hard water and ocean water. Reducing exposure is an easy way to preserve the softness of your wig. Other steps include those listed below.
Just like natural hair, you’ve got to wash your human hair wig on a regular basis. The process includes moisturizing it as well. Use a natural oil, such as coconut or Moroccan oil to infuse the strands of your wig with much needed hydration. Work it in well for the best results. An added bonus - the oil will give the wig a nice scent.
Next, you’ll want to wash out the oil. Leaving it in will lead to limp, greasy strands. After giving the wig some time to absorb the oil, it’s time to shampoo it. Make sure the water runs in the same direction as the hair to prevent tangles, and use a shampoo designed for the hair type of your wig.
After shampooing and rinsing, apply a moisturizing conditioner to your human hair wig. Work it through the top, all the way down to the tips of each strand. The nape and tips of your wig should get the most attention as they tend to get the driest. Let the conditioner work for a few minutes, then rinse it well. Finger comb as you go to remove tangles.
Now you should apply a deep conditioner. This product works to add extra moisturizing elements to each strand, reviving dry, brittle hair and giving your wig a lovely soft look and feel again. Be sure to follow manufacturers’ directions to get the best results.
The final step is drying your wig. Avoid wringing the strands as this can cause damage. Instead, gently squeeze out the water, then lay the wig flat on a towel to continue squeezing out the water. Place the wig on a wig stand and allow it to air dry. You can use a blow dryer, but keep in mind that this will cause dryness to reappear over time. Once your wig is dry, comb and style it.
