How to Apply and Care for Fake Eyelashes
January 17, 2019
Eyelashes, while protecting the eyes from particles in the air, also bring attention to the eyes. If the long, thick, fluffy lashes of your younger days have been slowly thinning or you’d just like to give that extra pop to your eyes, lash extensions are ideal.
False Eyelashes
Fake eyelashes give your eyes a dramatic, natural-looking appearance that you can’t achieve with thinning or light-colored natural eyelashes. Over the years, fake eyelashes have improved and are now made with a variety of synthetic and real hair materials. Fake eyelashes are attached to the upper eyelid via a strip that is bonded with glue, tape, or magnets.
Eyelashes range in price from a few dollars to around $50 per pair with those being made of real human hair is the most expensive and those made of synthetic materials being the cheapest. Those made of human or animal hair typically last longer than those made of synthetic materials and they are finer, more natural-looking, and are easier to curl. Those made of synthetic materials are heavier and look more “fake” because of their overly shiny black finish. These lashes, however, are less likely to lose their shape when exposed to moisture.
While fake eyelashes are often pictured as strips of bundles of individual hairs, there are some fake eyelashes that are simply one or a couple of these bunches. These individual bunches of hair are more tedious to apply, but they can provide a more natural look.
There are also hybrid lashes that aren’t quite full fake lashes but are somewhat like extensions. Unlike other fake lash types, these are applied at the base of one’s natural lashes instead of to the top eyelid.
Applying Fake Eyelashes
The application of fake eyelashes can be tedious and frustrating. In most cases, the eyelash strips are applied to the upper eyelid via the application of special glue. Some new varieties are held in place via small magnets.
Eyelashes are small and can be difficult to get the correct placement and get the lashes to securely attach. Because of their small size of the lashes and application site, there is a specialized eyelash applicator. These tweezer-looking tools that grab the lashes so you can better place them.
Removing Fake Eyelashes
Removing fake eyelashes is much easier than applying them. All one simply needs to do is to gently peel the lash strip away from the eyelid. Don’t forget to remove the layer of glue from the eyelid as well.
Caring for Your Fake Eyelashes
Fake eyelashes typically last between 4 and 20 uses depending on the quality and materials the lashes are made of. Synthetic lashes don’t last as long as those made from animal or human hair. If you wear mascara on your lashes, the extra cleaning will shorten their lifespan. Regardless of what type of eyelashes you have, you can prolong their usefulness and usability if you care for and maintain them.
It is best to remove your lashes every night before going to bed. Sleeping with your lashes may cause them to get bent. After removing your lashes, gently wipe the lashes with a make-up removal soaked Q-tip. Store the lashes in a case to keep them from getting lost and accidentally bent.
