Here's How Real Hair Wigs Are Made
November 26, 2022
Ever wondered how real hair wigs are made? It does pique the interest of many, especially for hairpieces that are of excellent quality. It makes you think how these are manufactured and turned into a wig that looks as authentic and natural as can be.
Dear reader, wonder no more. This short article should give you a brief background to this interesting and intricate process. Note that these steps are done after hair collection from people who’ve donated them.
Step 1: Preparation
In this initial step, wigmakers make sure that one, all strands lie in the same direction. They also check for louse eggs that may have been overlooked.
The preparation stage is also where wigmakers determine whether the wig will be straight or curly.
Step 2: Determining the Pattern
In this step, the wig’s foundation is taken care of. This ensures that the hairpiece would perfectly match the individual’s head shape. Here, accurate measurements are taken to ensure that the wig would be a snug fit.
Step 3: Cap Construction
The third step is all about building the wig foundation, which is called the cap construction. The foundation material is usually cut from fine-mesh silk, and usually, it is meant to match the base color of the hair.
To ensure accuracy of cap construction, a wooden head shape is used as a reference.
Step 4: Attachment
This process of attaching the hair to the net foundation is called knotting. These knots are made from single hairs and a full wig will usually have up to 40,000 knots. On average, it takes about 40 hours of tying to complete this process.
Step 5: Styling
The fifth and final step involves styling. After these first four steps, the completed hairpiece will then be pinned to a soft block. It will then be dampened and styled further using a wet comb before being covered with a dry net and placed in a warm oven for drying. Depending on the length and density of the wig, this process alone can take up to ten hours to complete.
